How to Make a PDF Fillable (Free, Without Acrobat)
A step-by-step guide to turning a flat PDF into a fillable form with real text fields and checkboxes — free and in your browser.
What “fillable” actually means
A fillable PDF contains interactive form fields (the PDF standard calls them AcroForm fields). When you click one in a PDF reader, you can type into it or tick it, and the answer is saved inside the file. Many PDFs only look like forms: the boxes are printed lines, so you can't type into them. Making a PDF fillable means adding real fields on top of those lines.
Step 1: Open your PDF
Go to Make a PDF Fillable and choose your file. It opens in the editor on your device; nothing is uploaded.
Step 2: Let Auto-detect help (optional)
Click Auto-detect fields. PDFQuick Forms looks at the text on each page for underscore lines (“Name: ________”), checkbox symbols (☐) and labels followed by blank space, and suggests fields. Suggestions are highlighted in amber — accept the good ones, adjust or discard the rest. Detection uses the PDF's text, so it won't find boxes drawn as graphics or text in scanned images.
Step 3: Add the fields yourself
Choose Text field, Checkbox or another type, and click on the page where it belongs. Drag the blue Move tab to reposition a field and the corner handle to resize it. With the keyboard, select a field and use the arrow keys (hold Shift for bigger steps).
Step 4: Name your fields
Each field needs a unique name. Good names — “Applicant name”, “Start date” — make the form easier to use with screen readers and when exporting data.
Step 5: Preview and download
Click Preview to try the form, then Download Fillable PDF. PDFQuick Forms re-opens the result to check every field is there before you get it.
